Shasta Courthouse

Redding, CA

The landscape surrounding the new Shasta County Courthouse creates a dignified and balanced composition of outdoor spaces to complement the Courthouse, while addressing the specific daily functions of the Courts and security concerns. Inspiration for the landscape concept is drawn from Shasta County’s robust agriculture and timber industries, as well as its native grasslands and high elevation forest landscapes.

A large entry courtyard composed of decomposed granite and deciduous trees planted in rows provides shade in the hot summers and sun in the cool winters. Linear bioswale planters and modular benches provide a variety of areas for users to sit and enjoy the space. On the southeast corner of the site, a stand of existing 50-60 foot tall conifer trees were preserved, and enhanced with additional conifer trees and native understory shrubs.
