UCI Claire Trevor School of the Arts Plaza

Irvine, CA

A design collaboration with Maya Lin on the University of California, Irvine campus transformed an existing plaza surrounded by six buildings, each designed by a different architectural firm. The entire plaza was utilized to create an awareness of all the senses: fragrant orange trees stand as sentries at entry points; native California Sycamore trees evoke memories of the plein-air painters; a 20’ wide firelane has been planted with textural groundcovers; whispering benches relay sound and video monitors stream visual transmissions of video art. Students project images on a building facade to be viewed from a sloping, ribbon walled amphitheater. The heart of the plaza is a black granite water table on which a curving, incised design is visible. Runway lights of three different colors reinforce the pathway geometry and change color at key intersections.
