Sacramento Courthouse

Sacramento, California

The intent for the landscape design surrounding the new Sacramento Courthouse is to create a dignified composition of outdoor spaces, complementing the building’s architecture and addressing the specific daily functions of the courts. Located in downtown Sacramento, the new courthouse site provides an excellent opportunity to create a significant contribution to the civic space of the city, including serving as a gateway to the future railyards development. Security and safety are significant concerns for the courthouse landscape as well. The development of the design will work to maintain clear site lines for passive and active perimeter surveillance. The design of the streetscape will be complemented where necessary by decorative anti-ram bollards placed at the corners of the site and as required by the Risk Assessment report. The graceful sloped walk will serve as an accessible entry to the courthouse and transition from the surrounding sloped streets. Large patterned swaths of low water planting on the ground plane will vary in texture and shades of green, referencing Sacramento’s agricultural history. The design of the landscape areas will create a harmonious composition of building and landscape that is welcoming, accessible and seamlessly integrated within the urban environment.
