| Claire Trevor School of the Arts Plaza at the University of California, Irvine We collaborated closely with Maya Lin on the Claire Trevor School of the Arts Plaza at the University of California, Irvine. Our goal was to transform a 30,000 square foot, impersonal walk-through surrounded by eight buildings, each designed by a different architectural firm, into a unified focal point for the campus. Overlaid with the natural fragrance of orange blossoms, lavender, roses, star jasmine and rosemary; this is a garden of the senses. Fragrant orange trees stand as sentries to entry points; rustling California sycamore trees evoke memories of the California plein-air painters; a twenty-foot wide fire lane was planted with scent-exuding ground covers; whispering benches and video monitors relay audio and visual transmissions. A granite table subtly shimmers with a layer of water that slides across the surface, inviting touch. Joining the creative forces of art and landscape architecture, we were able to transform a humdrum mixture of disparate buildings into a campus center with resonance and vitality. |
