Fine Arts Plaza, University of California, Irvine
We collaborated closely with Maya Lin on the Claire Trevor School of the Arts Plaza at the University of California, Irvine. Our goal was to transform an impersonal 30,000 square foot walk-through surrounded by eight buildings, each designed by a different architectural firm, into a unified focal point for the campus. At once an outdoor gallery, performance space, classroom, and park, the arts plaza sets the stage for multiple personal and social interactions as well as providing clear circulation through the arts quadrant of the campus.
Overlaid with the natural fragrance of orange blossoms, lavender, roses, star jasmine and rosemary, this is a garden of the senses. A granite table subtly shimmers with a layer of water that slides across the surface, inviting touch. Joining the creative forces of art and landscape architecture, we were able to transform a humdrum mixture of disparate buildings into a campus center with resonance and vitality.
