| Santa Monica Public Library For the design of the Santa Monica Public Library, we employed the metaphor of bringing to light the world beneath the surface of the ocean, in the same way as libraries bring to light scientific knowledge and cultural heritages. Working with Moore, Ruble, Yudell Architects, the landscape design reinforces the civic quality of the library through a series of courtyards that weave together the interior spaces and are integrated with the library. They are designed to accommodate a wide range of activities, from small group discussions to larger gatherings and celebrations. The project is LEED Gold Rated. All of the rainwater that falls on site during the year is cleansed and stored in a large subterranean cistern. Water needed during the year is pumped up to irrigate the xeriscape plantings that are exclusively used. The project demonstrates how a contextually strong piece of architecture combined with evocative plant materials can create an inviting, comfortable public oasis. |
