Industrial Complex
A supplier to industrial and large commercial facilities worldwide, the client contracted with Steven Ehrlich Architects and Pamela Burton & Company to design a building expansion and landscape master plan that would provide a high quality of indoor and outdoor space for its employees.  The concept for the site involved refurbishing existing gardens, creating new gardens, and converting existing expanses of parking lots into smaller car courts with bio-swale medians to clean storm water.  New canopy trees within the car courts reduce reflective heat and create a shaded environment for staff and visitors.Working closely with the architect we developed “activity nodes” outside the main corridors of the building in order to draw employees to café spaces and to encourage access to a circumambulatory path.  In a highly industrial neighborhood filled with concrete tilt-up buildings set in oceans of asphalt and lawn, the property becomes more porous and is planted with a wealth of non-invasive Mediterranean plant materials and ornamental grasses requiring less irrigation while providing visual relief. The result is a landscape that is beautiful, environmentally responsible, and filled with social spaces.
