Scenario Lane Residence, Bel Air
When a young couple in the entertainment industry decided to renovate an existing home overlooking the Stone Canyon reservoir in Bel Air, they were faced with a number of challenges, including vertical drops on all sides. There was no place to park cars, the driveway was narrow, and the steps providing circulation across the site were very steep and narrow.
We used the stunning views to create a dramatic landscape that blends the renovated house with a new studio building designed by Michael Palladino of Richard Meier and Partners.
A cinematically inspired series of outdoor spaces serve as refuges that frame views of the property. Native California plant materials were used to weave the banks of hillside into the more cultivated garden areas of the property adjacent to the living spaces. Outdoor rooms, borrowed landscapes, and the use of multiple viewpoints enlarge the usable area and enhance the feeling of open space while preserving a comfortable refuge in the center of the property.
